Durabull vs Amazon SQS + Step Functions

SQS and Step Functions can replace Redis + BullMQ. They do not inspect BullMQ jobs. Estimate SQS from send, receive, and delete requests, including empty receives; add Step Functions only if you use it for orchestration. Batching can reduce request costs.

A runtime changes how jobs execute. A dashboard changes how you operate them.
The case for SQS

Choose SQS when you are already on AWS, want a managed broker with an AWS SLA, and will write AWS-native workers.

The case for Durabull

Choose Durabull when your Node.js workers already use BullMQ. Moving to SQS means rewriting producers and workers; Durabull connects with a Redis URL.

Compare the documented deployment modes. “Not documented” means we did not find a vendor claim, not proof that a capability is impossible. Check the primary sources.

AI & MCP
AWS Labs publishes open-source MCP servers for SNS/SQS (manage queues, send and receive messages) and for running Step Functions state machines. None reads BullMQ.

Economics

Understand what you are paying for

Different products, different cost boundaries. Durabull’s hosted app is free to start and covers its dashboard. Redis, worker compute, storage, networking, and operational work remain yours. A runtime’s usage charges may cover orchestration or compute. The prices here are not a total-cost or savings benchmark.
SQS pricing
As of 2026-10-20 (AWS Price List published 2026-09-11): SQS Standard in us-east-1 is $0.40 per million requests after 1M free requests per month; FIFO is $0.50 per million. Step Functions Standard is $0.000025 per state transition after 4,000 free per month. Express is $1 per million requests plus duration.
SQS license
Proprietary AWS managed services.

Hosted dashboard is free to start. Redis, worker compute, and infrastructure operations remain your costs. Check the pricing page for current terms. Apache License 2.0 (OSI-approved open source). Self-host on your own infrastructure.
SQS Standard in us-east-1, pricing as of 2026-10-20: payload under 64 KB, no batching, three requests per job, no retries or empty receives, and the full 1M monthly free-request allowance available. Excludes compute, data transfer, KMS, and Step Functions. Durabull’s free-to-start hosted dashboard excludes Redis, workers, and operations.

Questions about SQS and Durabull

Is SQS cheaper than BullMQ?

It depends on workload and infrastructure. SQS charges for requests; BullMQ uses Redis and workers you provision. Include polling, payload sizes, batching, compute, and operational effort. Step Functions is an optional additional service, not a required SQS charge. Durabull adds a hosted dashboard that is free to start.
